Standardization and automation for Enterprise Reporting

Enterprise Reporting includes all reports in a written or electronic format, that were created systematically and include decision-making and management-related information. Enterprise Reporting has four main objectives:

  • Data preparation - a constraint is that the data preparation is consistent, ie free of contradictions.
  • Transparency – what happens in the company should be displayed fully, understandable, clear and correct.
  • Decision support – therefore the scope and complexity of the available data has to be reduced.
  • Target-actual comparison - the actual data are compared with target numbers, so that decision makers can identify whether and what effect planned measures may cause.

Besides to the report recipients it is distinguished between internal and external reporting. A standard reporting includes regularly once defined content that meet the information needs of the report receiver. Ad hoc reports address unique needs of decision-makers.

Practically proven framework for enterprise reporting

Standardization and automation in reporting can both reduce costs and increase transparency. This is shown by successful projects at our customers Henkel and Heraeus. It uses a framework of methods, technologies, and products across all disciplines of reporting, from data preparation to the creation and publication of reports.

Also in reporting, the earlier in the process of data preparation (Build & Connect) over the creation (Create) and publication (Publish) a standardization and automation, the easier it is to optimize costs and increase transparency. The three process steps can be assigned to individual disciplines in reporting. Few companies are equally active in all disciplines.

Information design for greater efficiency

It is always surprising how differently identical facts are presented in companies. Since a negative development is ever highlighted in yellow, blue or red; Time series start left or right; sometimes the x-axis intersects the revenue bar at zero or even at hundred; what a department is called "turnover" for another department "income/revenue".

Standardization in reporting ensures greater efficiency. Information Design - also known as Reporting Design - uses empirically validated design rules to ensure successful standardization using the appropriate reporting tools.

Flexibility plus simplicity guarantees success

Although the use of spreadsheets generally earns critical views in reporting and occasionally is vilified, each business intelligence application combining data has an Excel interface. However, Excel is, since the 2007 version much more than a spreadsheet. The flexibility and ease of use in conjunction with the general availability make Excel an indispensable tool for a successful reporting. In conjunction with the BI platform from Microsoft Excel actually guarantees success for efficient reporting – for standard reporting and ad hoc reporting as well as for internal and external reporting. Excel is the most widely used front end with reporting tools - and rightly so.

Reporting

The term Reporting in companies stands for the creation, design and presentation (information design) of important corporate data in the form of reports. Reporting has the essential task of promptly informing the responsible management levels about the latest events in the company / group. Summarized information is provided for specific target groups, for example for target / actual comparisons, analyzes or decisions. These so-called reporting reports can be in paper or electronic form. In medium-sized companies or corporations, the central reporting is organized by the Controlling department, which, thanks to a Data Warehouse The data can be summarized in a structured way.
